The introduction of the Microsoft Surface RT tablet and the impending release of the Surface Pro are surely offering some compelling new hardware choices for schools and students. Microsoft is clearly trying to fill the gap in productivity limitations of Apple iOS and Android tablets. The RT tablet has broken some new ground in offering improved input with the attachable keyboard, and the availability of MS Office. The important development here is not necessarily the RT tablet per se, but the new roadmap being offered by Microsoft. Schools and students are keenly watching this alternative unfold, or at least should be.
Chances are the only “tablet” you’ve seen is the iPad. Apple hit the ground running with the first mass produced “tablet”. However, they weren’t the only one with the idea. Samsung has recently release a slew of different sized tablets with their “ Galaxy Tab ” series, which runs off Google’s Android OS like many smartphones. HP has plans to release some “tabs” into the wild with their newly acquired Palm Web OS 2.0 system. Of course there have been many devices released running Microsoft’s Windows 7, but they have bigger plans for the market with their just released Windows Phone 7 OS.

In last week'â„¢s column, I wrote about the impact of tablets on laptop sales. There is, however, a rather interesting twist on this trend that could actually result in a reversal. It'â„¢s becoming clear to some of us researchers that most of the potential PC and laptop buyers are torn between tablets and laptops when it comes to buying a device to fit into their business or personal lifestyles. The early adopters of the iPad quickly discovered that while Steve Jobs originally positioned the iPad $629.00 at Walmart.comas a media consumption device and Compatible Parts, it could also cross over to serve as a productivity tool.
The Edge is essentially a laptop with a 360 degree rotating touch screen. The device appears to be consistent in size with a laptop more than an Ultrabook. It seems suited to easy portability although not quite as light as a tablet or Ultrabook. The screen will rotate into 4 positions; a traditional laptop, folded over for use as a tablet, closed to protect the screen, and a tent-like position to facilitate easy touch screen operation. Importantly, this device will have Windows 8, which makes available Word and Excel. Because the device has a real keyboard and touch-pad mouse, students will be able to create content efficiently.
When going to find and purchase a new computer, it's easy to see the allure of tablet computers. With windows 8 promising to expand further on what is possible with hand held computing, it's no wonder tablets are selling so well. Many think that because of this, tower computers will go out of business in the near future. However, most admit that tower computers are far too convenient and useful to give up quite yet, and though tablets are racing to catch up with all the pros of a tower computer, most small businesses still rely on their Windows XP applications to get them through the day.
