| I thought about Internet hunting Tuesday while Sen. Ben Cardin, a Maryland Democrat, introduced the ¡°Newspaper Revitalization Behave, ¡± which would ease the tax burden on newspapers that operate as non-profit organizations. (You can read the full text here.) Sure, newspapers could use a few hefty revitalization, but this earnest little bit of legislation addresses a societal problem that does not exist. The other thing to find out about this bill is the fact it will probably languish and die in the Senate Finance Committee. But it¡¯s still really worth discussing because, despite the flaws mentioned here - and within similarly critical posts by way of Tim Windsor, Rick Edmonds, Steve Yelvington, and Jeff Jarvis - that Newspaper Revitalization Act touches on some crucial doubts around non-profit news this better legislation could deal with.
