| When the air begins to get cooler, and the leaves start to fall from the trees, most people immediately think of storing the gardening supplies for the winter and getting ready to bundle up. But Wait! Before packing away your gardening equipment, don't forget to pick up some tulip bulbs to plant in your garden. Fall is the perfect time for planting tulip bulbs.

First things first: we almost certainly aren't getting as much snow as last winter. Probably not even close. That was in a once in a generation kind of winter. Furthermore, we're in a La Nina and that does not usually favor big snows around here (though there have been exceptions, like 1995 1996). But we do think this winter will be snowier than our typical La Nina winter (see more on La Nina below), and very likely to be snowier than the back to back La Nina winters of 2007 2008 and 2008 2009 when just 5 and 8 inches of snow fell.

False. Earth orbit is approaching perihelion its closest distance from the sun in early January. In fact, the earth is about 3 million miles closer to the sun now than in early July. Our seasons are caused by the planet axial tilt, which currently positions the sun most direct rays over the southern hemisphere. At the winter solstice, the northern hemisphere continues to lose more incoming solar energy than it receives, which is why winter coldest days still lie ahead.
