While much of Florida has been battered by the economic downturn and declining property values, this town 15 miles north of Orlando is one of the luckier ones. It hasn't cut most town services and hasn't raised property taxes. Tech is big in the area: major employers include Siemens, Lockheed Martin, and the University of Central Florida. Winter Springs doesn't have a very cohesive community yet, but the city is trying to fix that with a town center combining apartments with offices, restaurants, and a park. A typical four bedroom home here cost about $200,000 in mid 2011.

I'm getting old. The highlight of this trip for me wasn't a ski run but a drive. The incredible scenery as we drove 230km north from Banff along the Icefields Parkway to Jasper, through spectacular isolation and amazing glacial scenery, was breathtaking. Vast, glistening walls of ice cascade down from mountain peaks on either side of the road. The feeling of being miles from civilisation is overwhelming. The brassica family, which includes cabbages, cauliflower, broccoli and Brussels sprouts, is the mainstay of the traditional winter garden. Now that the weather is cooler it is a good time to plant them. These guys take a lot of space and time. However you can take advantage of slow growing brassicas by planting quick crops between them.
