Winter rye is planted at different times depending on where you live. Planting starts in September in the northern United States and in October in the South. For standalone plantings, apply 90 to 120 pounds of seed per acre. If planted in combination with clover or trefoil, use not more than 60 pounds of winter rye seed per acre broadcast. Add legumes like the clovers or trefoil at 8 to 10 pounds per acre, winter peas at 25 pounds per acre or even with winter wheat at 30 pounds per acre. Cut the amount of seed in half if you drill plant. Rye is best when planted mixed with legumes, but if you plant late in the season or if the soil is poor, planting winter rye alone may be best.
