| The other big problem that evergreen shrubs and trees encounter in winter is drying out. When winds blow at sub zero temperatures, the moisture is sucked right out of the leaves/needles. Spraying the plant with an anti desiccant, like Wilt Pruf, Vapor Guard or Transfilm will go a long way towards stopping that. It's too late this year to do it, sadly: being water based, these sprays must be applied when the temperature is above freezing and there is no rain predicted for 24 hours. These sprays are also great for putting on your Christmas tree to keep it from drying out too fast in your house.

Perhaps the most memorable part of Yellowstone winters is wildlife. Though bears hibernate during the winter, bison, elk, moose, coyotes and wolves are all common sights in the white hills. Occasionally a lone mountain lion is spotted. Lower tourism traffic and more open terrain bring these animals into plain view much more often than during summer months.

Clean out the furnace room The area your furnace is kept should not be doubled as a storage room. All objects that may be placed near or against the furnace need to be relocated elsewhere. This is especially important if you have a furnace that operates with a pilot light! It can also be helpful to carefully vacuum the outside of the furnace to remove cobwebs, dirt, and other debris.
