Big Pharma, small biotech鈥mall molecules, big biologics鈥rug discovery and development is all the same. It all a big gamble based on a treasure map of biology, chemistry, clinical, and regulatory clues and obstacles. Getting to the treasure depends on effectively executing on hundreds of big and small steps. But in the end the Captain must point the crew in the right direction with his Navigator, and expend his resources carefully because he may not always get to his destination or when he gets there the treasure chest is empty (or worst e.g. Vioxx, Exhubera). In Pharma the Captain is the CEO and the Navigator is the Head of Research. Success depends on the vision of its CEO and the path taken by its Head of Research鈥nd of course a good bit of luck. CEO鈥檚 need to hope for the best but plan for the worst. I don鈥檛 see them doing that very often.
